x11_read_data() parses an 'Option "XkbVariant" ""' line in
00-keyboard.conf with strv_split_full(..., EXTRACT_UNQUOTE), which turns
the empty quoted value into a non-NULL empty string rather than NULL.
Since 812aa57d2c ("string-util: beef up string_is_safe()") an empty
string is rejected by string_is_safe() unless STRING_ALLOW_EMPTY is
passed, so x11_context_is_safe() now refuses such a context and
x11_context_verify() discards the whole thing. As a result "localectl
status" reports "X11 Layout: (unset)" even though the file names a valid
layout, and compositors reading org.freedesktop.locale1 (e.g. the SDDM
greeter) fall back to the us layout.
Introduce x11_context_normalize(), suggested by @lionheartyu, which
converts empty strings to NULL while freeing the heap allocation —
unlike x11_context_empty_to_null() which only NULLs the pointer without
freeing. Call it at the end of x11_read_data(), before
x11_context_verify(), so empty option values are treated as unset. This
also keeps x11_context_equal() comparisons consistent with the setter
path (method_set_x11_keyboard) and vconsole_read_data(), which both
store NULL for empty values.
Fixes#43007
A leading-dash console keymap or leading-comma X11 layout can produce an
empty layout while converting between the two formats. find_converted_keymap()
then asserts on it, allowing malformed input to abort callers such as localed.
Return EINVAL for an empty derived layout instead.
Follow-up for 6d0f502736
UEFI firmware can report the currently-active keyboard layout via
EFI_HII_DATABASE_PROTOCOL.GetKeyboardLayout(). The layout descriptor
includes an RFC 4646 / BCP 47 language tag (e.g. "en-US"). Query this
from sd-boot/sd-stub and write it to a new LoaderKeyboardLayout EFI
variable, advertised through a new EFI_LOADER_FEATURE_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT
feature bit.
On the OS side, systemd-vconsole-setup reads the variable as a
lowest-priority fallback for the console keymap. To map the BCP 47
tag to a vconsole keymap we extend /usr/share/systemd/kbd-model-map
with an optional sixth column listing the comma-separated BCP 47 tags
each row covers; a new find_vconsole_keymap_for_bcp47() helper walks
the file, preferring an exact tag match and otherwise falling back to
the row whose tag matches the input's primary subtag. Credentials,
/etc/vconsole.conf, and vconsole.keymap= on the kernel command line
continue to take precedence.
bootctl status surfaces the new variable, printing the language tag
or "n/a (not reported by firmware)" when sd-boot advertises the
feature but the firmware HII database didn't expose a layout (common
on QEMU without a USB keyboard, since EDK2's PS/2 driver does not
register an HII keyboard layout).
Now that the necessary functions from log.h have been moved to macro.h,
we can stop including log.h in macro.h. This requires modifying source
files all over the tree to include log.h instead.
This allows reusing the logic in systemd-firstboot.c.
To avoid having to link libxkbcommon into libsystemd-shared, we add
a level of indirection to vconsole_convert_to_x11() so that the verify
function is passed in by the caller.
