Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 1cf40c9c72 shared/verbs: stop requiring an explicit program name
Almost all programs are simple and have only a single command. When
printing options, let's just use the first COMMAND block found by default.
This means we can drop the explicit program-name argument and reduce
copy&paste boilerplate.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 60dee66134 tmpfiles: convert to VERB_COMMAND and add --introspect-cli
The custom help() is replaced by a COMMAND() description, and
--introspect-cli is added. An explicit "Commands" option group is added
so that the section heading stays the same. The synopsis is now the same
as for systemd-sysusers, i.e. the "commands" are the options listed in the
Commands section. --help now goes through the pager, like other commands
with --no-pager.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 9eee40e687 selinux: alternate root support (#42768)
This PR changes some SELinux bits related to working with alternate
roots (specifically when using `--root` or `--image` on a bunch of
executables).

It addresses bug #42643 and it's hopefully the more whole approach than
the naive approach I PR'ed in #42644.

Before this PR the 'wrong' labels get applied because the path lookups
in the SELinux label database are prefixed with whatever the location of
the alternate root is (explained in more detail below).

Initially I had taken a very naive approach that did fix the issue by
stripping the alternate root from the path; however this still looks up
that path in the hosts' label database, which might differ from the one
contained in the alternate root.

So this expanded approach actually reads the label database from the
alternate root, strips the prefix *if* an alternate root is used
directly in `selinux-util.c` and then uses that to assign labels
instead.

See under the line for the behavior pre/post.

I've tried builds of this PR on both enforcing/non-enforcing/non-enabled
hosts *and* on enabled/non-enabled disk images and things seem to work
or at least fall back to ignoring MAC when required bits aren't present.

One thing is *if* an `/etc/selinux/config` is present that defines a
`SELINUXTYPE=` we *do* require the policy given to be present in the
image. This is the only new actual error in this code path that doesn't
get ignored.

We *could* verify that the path exists and also ignore it but I
personally don't think that's the right approach since the actual system
itself would likely also be broken anyhow. Let me know thoughts on that.

There's a tight coupling here still with the *hosts* SELinux policy in
that to set (potentially) unknown labels to the policy loaded in the
host kernel these executables would need to execute in a domain that
allows transitioning to `mac_admin`. I'd say that `install_t` is the
most likely candidate for that. See the first comment on this PR for
more explanation on it/request for input.

---

When mounting `a.raw` before running any tooling against it and showing
the `/etc/shadow` file labels we have:

```
€ sudo systemd-dissect --mount test/a.raw test/mnt/a
€ ls -Zlart test/mnt/a/etc/shadow
----------. 1 root root system_u:object_r:shadow_t:s0 520 Jun 27 07:55 test/mnt/a/etc/shadow
€ sudo systemd-dissect ---umount test/mnt/a
```

After running `systemd-firstboot` against the image, then remounting,
note the labels that have been changed to incorrect values:

```
€ sudo systemd-firstboot --image test/a.raw --root-password test
/home/user/src/github.com/teamsbc/artifacts/test/a.raw: /etc/passwd written.
/home/user/src/github.com/teamsbc/artifacts/test/a.raw: /etc/shadow written.
€ sudo systemd-dissect --mount test/a.raw test/mnt/a
€ ls -Zlart test/mnt/a/etc/shadow
----------. 1 root root system_u:object_r:init_var_run_t:s0 579 Jun 27 08:01 test/mnt/a/etc/shadow
```

The behavior before this PR looks up the labels in the label database of
the host, but the path that gets looked up is the path where the image
is temporarily mounted, or in the case of `--root` where the root is on
the host. Since that path doesn't define any labels we get the labels of
the location where the file was created on the host. In this case since
`--image` was used, which mounted things in a temporary location we end
up with `var_run_t`.

If this image is booted things that want to read `/etc/shadow` might not
be allowed to read files labeled this way; thus services fail to start,
and root can't login when SELinux is in enforcing mode.

After this PR is applied there are two main differences in how things
are handled. The first being that instead of reading the label database
from the host (which might have none, or have a different one from the
one contained inside an image or root) we read the label database from
inside the alternate root. This tries to make sure we get the correct
labels for given paths.

Second, and most importantly, if we did init SELinux with an alternate
root then any paths passed to the relevant label lookup functions strip
that alternate root from the path. While previously we'd look up a path
like `/run/dissect-XXXX/etc/shadow` we now look up a path like
`/etc/shadow` *and* this path gets looked up in the label database in
the alternate root.

Together these things give in my opinion better handling of SELinux in
alternate roots. To confirm things work here's the same operations on
the second copy of our image:

```
€ sudo systemd-dissect --mount test/b.raw test/mnt/b
artifacts € ls -Zlart test/mnt/b/etc/shadow
----------. 1 root root system_u:object_r:shadow_t:s0 520 Jun 27 07:55 test/mnt/b/etc/shadow
€ sudo ~/src/github.com/systemd/systemd/build/systemd-firstboot --image test/b.raw --root-password test
/home/user/src/github.com/teamsbc/artifacts/test/b.raw: /etc/passwd written.
/home/user/src/github.com/teamsbc/artifacts/test/b.raw: /etc/shadow written.
€ sudo systemd-dissect --mount test/b.raw test/mnt/b
€ ls -Zlart test/mnt/b/etc/shadow
----------. 1 root root system_u:object_r:shadow_t:s0 579 Jun 27 08:44 test/mnt/b/etc/shadow
```

Showing that we now have the correct labels applied.

Simon de Vlieger d652f6dc44 selinux: wire up LabelContext in tmpfiles, firstboot, sysusers
These three one-shot tools operate on alternate roots via --root/--image
but until now created files with host SELinux labels, producing images
that fail to boot or run with enforcing mode because every file carries
the wrong security context.

Create a LabelContext from arg_root at startup and thread it through all
labeling call sites so the target image gets labeled according to its own
policy.

Simon de Vlieger 6b0e3ea222 label: plumb label_context through LabelOps
SELinux labeling with --root/--image needs per-call context to carry an
alternate policy database and root prefix. The current LabelOps interface
has no way to pass this, forcing any solution to rely on global state.

Add a LabelContext *label_context to the label_ops callbacks and all
intermediate layers. Generic filesystem functions that most callers use
(xopenat_full, write_string_file_full, etc.) get a _label variant
carrying the extra parameter, with inline wrappers preserving the
original signatures so the vast majority of call sites remain untouched.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 7be812ae70 meson: rework -Dstandalone-binaries= option
The option is generalized from a simple boolean switch that enables
a fixed list to a list-of-patterns.
The old value works, but is deprecated: -Dstandalone-binaries=true is translated
to -Dstandalone-binaries=repart,report,tmpfiles,sysusers,shutdown.

We could already build all normal executables as .standalone, but the
installation only supported a small fixes subset. This wasn't flexible
enough:
- packagers might want to provide additional standalone binaries then the
  small subset that was already enabled
- but at the same time, whenever new binaries were added to this subset,
  downstream packaging had to be adjusted in sync, at least in the case of
  Fedora, because otherwise we'd get a complaint about unexpected .standalone
  binaries in the temporary install root.
With the new option, downstreams can just specify the binaries that they
want to be installed in the .standalone variant.

As usual with this type of change, the build dir must be reprovisioned.

Yu Watanabe 661ab8b6fd tree-wide: drop DLOPEN_FOO() macros
Since 4c0d8d9673, most dlopen notes are
set at the beginning of the executables. Let's manage all dlopen notes
there, rather than setting them where dlopen is called.

Note that the only exceptions are the LIBBPF_NOTE for networkd and
nsresource. Since dlopen_bpf() is wrapped in an `#if` guard, the notes
are instead set within the corresponding functionality.

As a result, the DLOPEN_FOO() wrapper macros are no longer needed and
can be dropped completely.

Daan De Meyer 5a12005c83 copy: drop COPY_REFLINK
Reflinking is a safe optimization whenever the source and destination are
regular, seekable files on a filesystem that supports cloning. Requiring each
caller to opt in through COPY_REFLINK adds flag plumbing without changing the
necessary fallback behavior.

Drop COPY_REFLINK, renumber the remaining flags, and have copy_bytes_full()
unconditionally try FICLONE or FICLONERANGE before entering its normal copy
loop. Isolate the clone attempt and its file-offset bookkeeping in a helper so
copy_bytes_full() only has to handle its cloned, unavailable, and error results.
A successful clone therefore completes in one operation, while an unsupported
or rejected clone falls back to progress-limited copy_file_range(), sendfile(),
or buffered copying. Keep the public reflink helpers for operations that
specifically require clone semantics.

Existing test-copy coverage exercises both bounded and unbounded regular-file
copies through copy_bytes_full().

Yu Watanabe 4c0d8d9673 tree-wide: embed dlopen notes into individual executables
Previously, when a library was dynamically loaded via a helper function
inside libsystemd-shared.so, the resulting dlopen ELF note was not
propagated to the invoking executable's ELF metadata.

This commit explicitly annotates each executable with the relevant
dlopen ELF notes for any optional dependencies it might potentially
load. This ensures that package managers and build systems can properly
discover runtime dependencies that are triggered indirectly.

This also switches all these notes to be defined via SD_ELF_NOTE_DLOPEN_ANCHORED().
Consequently, any notes added within unreachable or unused functions will be
automatically garbage-collected by the linker (--gc-sections) instead of
bloating the final binary.

Yu Watanabe 1f76654f94 meson: automate .standalone variant generation via extended 'install' field
Extend the 'install' keyword for executable definitions to accept four
modes—'yes', 'no', 'both', and 'static'—to elegantly manage the creation
and installation of both shared and statically-linked (.standalone) binaries.

- 'yes' / 'no': Standard behavior (mapped to true/false).
- 'both': Installs both the shared and static variants.
- 'static': Installs the static variant under the original name, while
  suffixing the uninstalled shared variant with '.shared'.

With this change, any arbitrary executable can now have its `.standalone`
variant built on demand simply by invoking `ninja <target>.standalone`.
For example, `varlinkctl` did not previously support a standalone variant,
but it can now be built explicitly via `ninja varlinkctl.standalone`.

These `.standalone` binaries are not built by default unless explicitly
specified as a ninja target or enabled via `-Dstandalone-binaries=true`.
Thus, the default build time should remain unaffected.

This centralisation eliminates a massive amount of boilerplate and duplicated
target declarations across almost all subdirectories (e.g., systemd-repart,
systemd-tmpfiles, systemd-shutdown, and systemd-report tools).

intermediate build artifact to be used in a later build artifact, and for a
given artifact, a list "donors". The first list was called "extract", because
it is passed to the .extract_objects() meson function, and the second was
called "objects", because that is the meson parameter to specify pre-built
objects files (6350d2dbd9). But this naming is
confusing: we don't care about the 'extract' step, this is something internal
to the build machinery. And 'objects' is a very generic term.

Let's use 'export' for the stuff that is "exported" for other binaries to use,
and 'import' to say where to import from. Those terms are symmetrical and the
association between them should be intuitive. (If you think the terms are
actually assymetrical, there are precedents for confusing the import with the
import sources. E.g. in modern English, turkeys are called so because they were
imported from the Americas and guineafowls were imported from Africa via
Türkiye and all that foreign stuff is alike.)

Yu Watanabe 5280cd7bdb tree-wide: check if necessary cflags dependencies are set
This makes each `foo_cflags` dependency define a `SYSTEMD_CFLAGS_MARKER_FOO`
macro, and checks if the macro is set when headers provided by external
libraries are included.

With this, we can fail fast at compile time if necessary `_cflags`
dependencies are omitted in meson.build. Missing dependencies found by this
mechanism have been added across the tree.

dongshengyuan af02a393f5 tmpfiles: fix device node major:minor logging to use i->major_minor
The debug log after creating a device node passed major(i->mode) and
minor(i->mode) to format the device number, but i->mode holds the
file permission bits (e.g. 0644), not the device number.

The device major:minor is stored in i->major_minor, which is also
what mknodat() receives. Use that field instead so the log correctly
reports the created device number.

dongshengyuan 4393625a1b tmpfiles: propagate clean_item_instance() error in clean_item()
The CREATE_DIRECTORY, TRUNCATE_DIRECTORY, CREATE_SUBVOLUME,
CREATE_SUBVOLUME_INHERIT_QUOTA, CREATE_SUBVOLUME_NEW_QUOTA and
COPY_FILES branches in clean_item() called clean_item_instance()
but discarded its return value, always returning 0.

If dir_cleanup() fails (e.g. cannot stat a subdirectory), the error
is silently swallowed and the caller has no way to detect the failure.
The sibling EMPTY_DIRECTORY/IGNORE_PATH branches already propagate
the error correctly via glob_item().

Luca Boccassi b0ede9f9ee tree-wide: convert dlopen_*() callers to DLOPEN_* wrapper macros
Switch the executable-owned call sites from the plain dlopen_<lib>()
helpers to the new DLOPEN_<LIB>() macros, so that each binary that loads
an optional library at runtime now carries its own .note.dlopen note
instead of relying solely on libsystemd-shared. Each call site passes a
priority reflecting whether it hard-depends on the library (required) or
degrades gracefully without it (recommended).

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek c83ff0e58d user-util: return malloc'ed strings in get_user_creds

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 3ecd6b69cf user-util: stop mangling groupname in get_group_creds
The param was input/output, which is unexpected and confusing and
actually made most callers much more complicated than they needed to be.
The function was playing fast and loose with the return value. In some
cases it was returning a static string, which would be completely fine.
But in other case it was returning a pointer into the getgrgid static
buffer, i.e. that return value could be overwritten. AFAICT, this didn't
matter in any of the callers, but we shouldn't do that anyway.

So use a separate output param with an allocated string that the caller
is responsible for.

It turns out that all callers pass NULL (outside of tests) and zero for
flags. So the function _could_ be simplified. But get_user_creds is
called with all the params actually used, and I think having the the
functions so different wouldn't be nice. I first wrote a commit to
drop the unused params, but then I discarded it.

The error message in exec-invoke.c is fixed.

Daan De Meyer 74d392ed1b tree-wide: standardize header names across src/fundamental, src/basic and src/shared
Drop the -fundamental suffix from src/fundamental/ headers in favor of names
that match their src/basic/ or src/shared/ counterparts (e.g.
macro-fundamental.h -> macro.h, assert-fundamental.h -> assert-util.h,
cleanup-fundamental.h -> cleanup-util.h). Rename src/basic/{btrfs,label}.{c,h}
to use the -util suffix to match the existing shared/btrfs-util and
shared/label-util siblings. Rename src/shared/mkdir-label.{c,h} to mkdir.{c,h}
and src/shared/tmpfile-util-label.{c,h} to tmpfile-util.{c,h} to match the
corresponding src/basic names.

This saves us from having to come up with separate names for files that do
the same thing across tiers, and it makes it easier to move stuff between
src/fundamental, src/basic and src/shared: consumers just #include "foo.h"
and pick up whichever tier their -I path resolves to first, so call sites
don't need to be updated when an API moves between layers.

Where a higher-tier wrapper exists (e.g. src/basic/macro.h wrapping
src/fundamental/macro.h), the wrapper uses an explicit "../fundamental/foo.h"
or "../basic/foo.h" relative include for the lower-tier header. We can't use
GCC's #include_next directive for this — when the wrapper is reachable both
via same-dir-as-source lookup and via -I (e.g. -Isrc/shared) for the
directory it lives in, #include_next advances by exactly one slot in libcpp's
internal directory chain and lands on the same physical directory it was
already in, never reaching the lower-tier sibling (see make_cpp_dir() in
gcc/libcpp/files.cc:1986).

To make sure the right headers are always picked up, the include directories
are reordered so that e.g. src/shared always takes priority over src/basic and
similar for the other directories.

Lennart Poettering 99ce7a0770 options: get rid of "on_error" parameter to FOREACH_OPTION
I am really not a fan of full code lines passed to macros as parameters.
Let's get rid of the 3rd parameter of FOREACH_OPTION() hence:

1. Let's return errors just as a regular value (though a negative one),
   that can be handled via a OPTION_ERROR case statement for the switch.
   This normalizes handling of the error, just like any other event
   returned by the option parser.

2. In order to avoid exploding the amount of boilerplate in each use
   (that just propagates the error on OPTION_ERROR), let's then
   introduce an explicit FOREACH_OPTION_OR_RETURN(), that returns from
   the calling function on its own (and makes that clear in the name).

Together this cleans up, normalizes the logic and shortens the code.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 5ff0ccaf8b tree-wide: change option_parse() to return option and arg via internal state
It was requested to make the 'c', 'opt', and 'arg' params the same, i.e.
defined through the FOREACH_OPTION macro. But we can't do that easily,
because 'c' was defined in the for loop definition, and we can only
define variables of the same type in that way. Also, in some cases we
need only 'c', in other cases with need 'c' and 'arg, in some cases 'c'
and 'opt', and in other cases all three. We'd need to either
conditionalize or mark those variables with _unused_ to deal with
compiler warnings. But a different approach works quite nicely: add
state.opt and state.arg to show the current option and it's argument.
(The short names are picked on purpose to reduce verbosity since those
are used a lot.)

Daan De Meyer d49f3f287a dlopen: take log_level argument and log in fallback stubs
Every dlopen_xxx() helper now takes an int log_level argument. It is
passed through to dlopen_many_sym_or_warn() (which in turn propagates it
to dlopen_verbose() for the library-not-installed case), and is used by
the fallback stub when support for the library is not compiled in to
emit a "<lib> support is not compiled in." message at the caller's level.
Callers pass LOG_DEBUG when gracefully degrading, or a higher level when
the failure should surface, and no longer need to log redundantly at the
call site.

As part of this, dlopen_bpf_full() (which already took a log_level) is
merged into dlopen_bpf() rather than keeping both.

The static inline fallbacks used to live in the headers, which required
pulling log.h in from every header that declared a dlopen_xxx(). Move
them into the .c files instead: the declaration is always outside the
#if HAVE_XXX block, the impl sits outside the outer #if HAVE_XXX wrap
with its own internal #if HAVE_XXX/#else/#endif, and apparmor-util.c,
idn-util.c, libmount-util.c and pam-util.c are now always compiled so
they can host their stubs.

Ivan Shapovalov e18b75c3f1 tmpfiles: use NSEC_INFINITY consistently in dir_cleanup()
Correctness analysis
====================

The *time_nsec variables are used for a total of 2 or 3 times:

- twice in needs_cleanup() (lines 788, 839)
- once in a recursive dir_cleanup() (line 764) as self_*time_nsec

In needs_cleanup(), all passed timestamps are guarded against
NSEC_INFINITY (this does not fix any real bugs as a 0 value is also
older than any cutoff point and thus would not cause any deletions).

Recursively in dir_cleanup(), the self_* variables are used to reset
the toplevel directory utimes, where they are superficially compared
against NSEC_INFINITY as a guard, but subsequently mishandled in the
case when only one of the times is NSEC_INFINITY: in this case, it will
be a) logged as a bogus value and b) passed through directly to
timespec_store_nsec(), which does special-case it, but in a way that
is invalid for futimens(). This is further fixed up by explicitly
mapping NSEC_INFINITY to TIMESPEC_OMIT.

This constitutes a bugfix in theory, as a ~STATX_ATIME return from
statx() would have previously caused the corresponding utime to be
reset to 0 epoch) rather than being omitted from being set. However,
in a directory with ~STATX_ATIME, attempts to set atime would likely
be ignored as well.

Mostly this is a self-consistency fix that establishes that
dir_cleanup() should be called with NSEC_INFINITY in place of
absent timestamps.
