Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek efd63ddfbf shared/verbs: turn verb argument specification into nulstr
Like the command-level CommandDescription.argspec, a verb's argspec is now
a nulstr, so that a verb may declare multiple alternative usage lines. The
verbs help table renders one synopsis line per nulstr entry in the
synopsis cell.

All verb argument specifications must gain an explicit NUL suffix. This
is a lot of churn, but I think this needs to be done. For now, there'll
be only one user of the new functionality (i.e. a verb with more than
one argspec), but I think we'll eventually want to use this in other
places too.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 1cf40c9c72 shared/verbs: stop requiring an explicit program name
Almost all programs are simple and have only a single command. When
printing options, let's just use the first COMMAND block found by default.
This means we can drop the explicit program-name argument and reduce
copy&paste boilerplate.

Daan De Meyer 5a12005c83 copy: drop COPY_REFLINK
Reflinking is a safe optimization whenever the source and destination are
regular, seekable files on a filesystem that supports cloning. Requiring each
caller to opt in through COPY_REFLINK adds flag plumbing without changing the
necessary fallback behavior.

Drop COPY_REFLINK, renumber the remaining flags, and have copy_bytes_full()
unconditionally try FICLONE or FICLONERANGE before entering its normal copy
loop. Isolate the clone attempt and its file-offset bookkeeping in a helper so
copy_bytes_full() only has to handle its cloned, unavailable, and error results.
A successful clone therefore completes in one operation, while an unsupported
or rejected clone falls back to progress-limited copy_file_range(), sendfile(),
or buffered copying. Keep the public reflink helpers for operations that
specifically require clone semantics.

Existing test-copy coverage exercises both bounded and unbounded regular-file
copies through copy_bytes_full().

Yu Watanabe 4c0d8d9673 tree-wide: embed dlopen notes into individual executables
Previously, when a library was dynamically loaded via a helper function
inside libsystemd-shared.so, the resulting dlopen ELF note was not
propagated to the invoking executable's ELF metadata.

This commit explicitly annotates each executable with the relevant
dlopen ELF notes for any optional dependencies it might potentially
load. This ensures that package managers and build systems can properly
discover runtime dependencies that are triggered indirectly.

Frantisek Sumsal 9ae50c78cc sd-event: use CLOCK_BOOTTIME for rate limits
When a rate limit is armed, for example via StartLimitInterval=, and the
machine is suspended, the rate limit's "clock" is suspended as well,
since the elapse checks use CLOCK_MONOTONIC. This then causes unexpected
situations where a rate limit armed via StartLimitInterval=1h, followed
by a 10 hour suspend, would elapse after 11 hours total.

Let's avoid this by switching the rate limits to CLOCK_BOOTTIME, which
works the same as CLOCK_MONOTONIC, but accounts for the time spent in
suspend as well.

There's one slight concern when it comes to upgrade path - the old
"begin" value of the rate limit is stored as CLOCK_MONOTONIC, but after
upgrading systemd and serializing/deserializing the state it will be
suddenly compared against now(CLOCK_BOOTTIME), which might cause some
rate limits to elapse "prematurely". But this is just a one-time thing,
after which the rate limit timers should re-assess themselves.

Arseniy Kostevich caf6d7b6b5 user-record-nss: preserve valid nss lookup aliases in records
NSS lookups may resolve an alias-like name to a canonical user or group
name. For example, SSSD can resolve a userPrincipalName such as
"testuser@example.test" while returning a passwd record whose pw_name is
the canonical login name "testuser".

The NSS userdb worker currently converts such records using only the
canonical name. As a result, the originally requested lookup name is lost,
and lookups through the varlink/multiplexer path may fail with
ConflictingRecordFound even though direct NSS lookup succeeds.

Preserve the originally requested lookup name as an alias when it differs
from the canonical passwd/group name and passes normal alias validation.
Add the alias both to the parsed record fields and to the JSON
representation so serialized records remain self-consistent.

Extend group record loading and matching to understand aliases too.
When both a name and UID/GID are specified in a userdb lookup, prefer
the by-name path so alias-aware records can satisfy the subsequent
consistency checks.

This allows canonicalized NSS results to match the original lookup name
correctly and fixes session setup for users logging in with
NSS-resolvable aliases such as UPNs.

Daan De Meyer a14adac423 meson: drop libdl, threads, and librt dependencies
Our baseline glibc is 2.34, which merged libdl, libpthread (the
dependency('threads') target), and librt into libc. Empty .so/.a stubs
remain for backward compatibility with old binaries, but new builds
resolve dl_*, pthread_*, mq_*, timer_*, etc. directly from libc.
On musl the same libraries are likewise empty stubs.

Drop the libdl, threads, and librt entries from every meson.build, and
remove the now-stale 'Libs.private: -lrt -pthread' from libudev.pc.in
since both flags resolve to empty link-time stubs on glibc 2.34+ and
musl.

Verified with readelf -d that libsystemd.so, libudev.so, and systemd no
longer carry DT_NEEDED entries for libdl/libpthread/librt.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek b2c6cc6a8e userdbctl: actually implement option parsing stop after --chain
The basic idea is that --chain should stop option parsing. But
previously this didn't work, so --chain could be specified anywhere
in the command line. To maintain with compatibility with that,
allow --chain to be specified anywhere until the first positional
arg or option in the command string. This allows options to be passed
in the expected fashion:
  userdbctl --chain ssh-authorized-keys user cmd --opt1 --opt2
  userdbctl --chain ssh-authorized-keys user -- cmd --opt1 --opt2
but also allows the invocations which worked previously:
  userdbctl ssh-authorized-keys user --chain cmd
  userdbctl ssh-authorized-keys user cmd --chain

Fixes 8072a7e6a9.

The error messages are extended a bit. "binary path" is misleading:
we support all kinds of executables, not only compiled programs.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek cb8359877e userdbctl: convert to OPTION and VERB macros
The situation with --chain is complicated. The old code tried to use "+…"
in getopt_long() to stop option parsing. But it didn't actually work.
This logic was originally added in 8072a7e6a9.
ef9c12b157 added an comment about 'optind=0'
which explains why the code doesn't work, but the code wasn't changed.

To wit:
$ userdbctl.old --no-pager --chain ssh-authorized-keys zbyszek -- /bin/echo --asdf
--asdf
$ userdbctl.old --no-pager --chain ssh-authorized-keys zbyszek /bin/echo -- --asdf
--asdf
$ userdbctl.old --no-pager --chain ssh-authorized-keys zbyszek /bin/echo --asdf
userdbctl.old: unrecognized option '--asdf'
(Basically, if "--" is used, it can be anywhere, since getopt_long() doesn't do
anything special after --chain and looks for the next option. There were some
tests of --chain, but they all used the username as the positional argument, so
it wasn't misinterpreted as an option.)

This behaviour is preserved in the conversion.

--help is generally the same except for expected formatting changes.
--json= is moved above between --output= and -j. For some reason it was
further down.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 31ddd87da0 tree-wide: extend verbs functions with extra per-verb data parameter
We often have a pattern where the same verb function is used for
multiple actions. This leads to an antipattern where we figure out what
action needs to be taken from argv[0] multiple times: often once in
parse_argv() to figure out what options are allowed, then once again
implicitly in dispatch_verb(), and then again in the action verb itself.
Let's allow passing a parameter into the verb to simplify this.

This matches a pattern we have in conf-parser.h, where we have both
void *userdata (more global) and void *data (per-config item). Here,
I opted for uintptr_t userdata. It seems that most of the time we'll
want to just pass an enum value. This works OK with no casts. I also
tried a void* and union. In both cases, much more boilerplate is needed:
either a cast or a macro to help avoid compiler warnings. uintptr_t
seems generic enough to cover foreseeable usecases with no fuss.

This is a noop refactoring. See next commit for an example.

Lennart Poettering 9dcd4113d0 userdb: add support for looking up users or groups by uuid. (#37097)
Followon to #37024.

This implements (mostly) what was suggested there, except that only a
single UUID is accepted (modifying things to support multiple is a
relatively straightforward change from here)

I'm not really convinced this is the right approach:

* I can't really think of any cases where you'd need to query by
multiple UUIDs (I guess you might want to lookup multiple users, but in
that case why aren't there "usernames" or "uids" arrays?)
* If I specify username "foo" and UID 1234 and UID 1234 exists and has
username "bar", I get back the error `ConflictingRecordFound`
* If I specify username "foo" and UUID abcdef... and username "foo"
exists but has UUID 123456..., I get back the error
`NonMatchingRecordFound`

This makes the two ID types behave differently.

Additionally, when querying by `uuid`, the multiplexer will always sends
`more: true`, which is fine but a little unexpected.

I do think unifying things through the `UserDBMatch` struct could make
sense, but in that case I think it would make sense to unify all query
types in that way (username, uid, uuid), identify when the filter is for
a single or multiple records, and centralise determination of conflict
vs non matching record errors.

`userdb_by_name`/`userdb_by_uid` could then become helper functions for
the simple case where no additional filtering is needed.

Thoughts?

One other thought: Should the multiplexer just pass through all
parameters, even unknown ones, to the backend services? Even if it
doesn't know how to filter by every property, the backends might, and it
would be useful to allow them to optimise things. (I realise the
disadvantage of this, ofc, is loss of error checking)

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 858cb6e49e tree-wide: use ERRNO_NAME almost everywhere
We had errno_to_name() which works for "known" errnos, and returns NULL for
unknown ones, and then ERRNO_NAME which always returns an answer, possibly just
a number as a string, but requires a helper buffer.

It is possible for the kernel to add a new errno. We recently learned that some
architectures define custom errno names. Or for some function to unexpectedly
return a bogus errno value. In almost all cases it's better to print that value
rather than "n/a" or "(null)". So let's use ERRNO_NAME is most error handling
code. Noteably, our code wasn't very good in handling the potential NULL, so
in various places we could print "(null)". Since this is supposed to be used
most of the time, let's shorten the names to ERRNO_NAME/errno_name.

There are a few places where we don't want to use the fallback path, in
particular for D-Bus error names or when saving the error name. Let's rename
errno_to_name() to errno_name_no_fallback() to make the distinction clearer.

- through missing_syscall.h, which is planned to covert to .c file.
- through signal.h -> bits/sigstksz.h, which is new since glibc-2.34.
Note, signal.h is included by sd-eevent.h. So, many source files
indirectly include unistd.h if newer glibc is used.

Currently, our baseline on glibc is 2.31. We need to support glibc older
than 2.34, but unfortunately, we do not have any CI environments with
such old glibc. CIFuzz uses glibc-2.31, but it builds only fuzzers, and
