ssh-generator: generate /etc/issue.d/ with VSOCK ssh info data
I find myself trying to log into a fresh ParticleOS VM started via
systemd-vmspawn all the time, but I don't know its CID. Let's show it on
the getty screen, to make it immediately visible.
Related to https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/37641.
The name "transient settings" was used in docs/TRANSIENT-SETTINGS.md.
Using "setting" helps distinguish this from D-Bus "properties", which are
a much larger set, partially overlapping.
Currently, when running "systemctl preset-all --root=xxx" in mkosi
to enable/disable units for initrds, the system presets are used.
The problem with this approach is that the system presets are written
for the system, and that is not necessarily ideal for an initrd, but we
still want to use the same packages in the initrd that we install in the
system, so let's introduce a separate directory for initrd presets which
is used to pick up preset files from when we detect that we're configuring
an initrd (by looking for /etc/initrd-release).
We also introduce a systemd preset file for the initrd, which is based on
the system one, except with all the stuff unnecessary for the initrd removed.

ephemeral/ephemeral-import are described as possible '--mutable' options but
not present in the list. Note, "systemd-sysext --help" lists them correctly.

The commit naively returned early from socket_enter_running(), which however
is quite problematic, as the socket will be woken up over and over again
without doing a thing, until we eventually hit Poll/TriggerLimit*=.
On top of that it requires hacks to hold the start job for initrd-switch-root.service
up. Overall I doubt that is the right approach.
Let's instead hook this into our job engine, and try to activate
the service again when some other units are stopped. If all installed
jobs have been run yet we're still seeing the conflict or the manually
selected timeout is reached, fail the socket as before.
Prior to this change, no user shell can be specified in the user
records passed into a container via --bind-user=. This new option
allows users to:
1. When false (the default), continue to specify no user shell for
each bound user record, resulting in the use of the container's
default shell for bound users.
2. When true, include each host user's shell in the corresponding
user record passed into a container (via --bind-user=).
3. When an absolute path, set that path as the user shell for each
user record passed into a container (via --bind-user=).
This does not change the existing behavior, but allows users to
opt-in to either copy the shells specified by the host user records
or override the shell explicitly by path.
This is a new meta value for the `Format=` option, which is equivalent
as specifying `Label=_empty` and `NoAuto=1` for compatibility with
sd-sysupdate.

[1] says:
> Since 0.60.0 the name argument is optional and defaults to the basename of
> the first output
We specify >= 0.62 as the supported version, so drop the duplicate name in all cases
where it is the same as outputs[0], i.e. almost all cases.

I still am annoyed that this wasn't documented properly when the
inhibitor locks where modified, even though raised multiple times in PR
reviews.

Let's make the fs sector size configurable. This also adds
infrastructure so that we can pick different sector sizes as defaults
eventually, but doesn't actually do that.
(Background: I think we should probably default to native sector size
for the ESP, but Daan disagrees, so I'll leave this out for now).
Also, if a device ACL list is defined, also go via IPC (instead of
trying to patch it, as before).
The outcome is that the tighter rules continue to apply when configured.

@BUILD_ROOT@ is replaced with the _quoted_ build path. Hence, if
@BUILD_ROOT@ is quoted, the result is doubly quoted, and the script does
not work if the path contains spaces.
Fixes#37953.
The format is not specific to gpg, it's defined by the pgp
protocols. Lintian even warns about it:
systemd-container: openpgp-file-has-implementation-specific-extension [usr/lib/systemd/import-pubring.gpg]
Rename it accordingly, as new pgp implementations are slowly becoming
more popular.
Keep using /etc/systemd/import-pubring.gpg for backward compatibility.
Since 435c372ce5 added in v256,
num_entries part of the Range header is mandatory and error is returned
when it's not filled in. This makes using the "follow" argument clumsy,
because for an indefinite following of the logs, arbitrary high number
must be specified. This change makes it possible to omit it again and
documents this behavior in the man page.
Moreover, as the cursor part of the header was never mandatory, enclose
it in square brackets in the documentation as well and elaborate how
indexing works.
Following are some concrete examples of the Range header which are now
accepted:
entries= (or entries=:)
- everything starting from the first event
entries=cursor
- everything starting from `cursor`
entries=:-9:10
- last 10 events and close the connection
If the follow flag is set:
entries=:-4:10
- last 5 events, wait for 5 new and close connection
entries=:-9:
- last 10 events and keep streaming
Note that only the very last one is changing current behavior, but
reintroduces pre-v256 compatibility.
Fixes#37172
Current text hints that machine-id in template image should be empty
if the system is read-only. But most of the bare metal systems and
regular VMs have /etc read-only at this phase of boot.
This controls the new SO_PASSRIGHTS socket option in kernel v6.16.
Note that I intentionally choose a different naming scheme than
Pass*=, since all other Pass*= options controls whether some extra
bits are attached to the message, while this one's about denying
file descriptor transfer and it feels more explicit this way.
And diverging from underlying socket option name is precedented
by Timestamping=. But happy to change it to just say PassRights=
if people disagree.
This also makes ip6tnl can be created without specifying Mode= setting,
as the kernel accepts new-link netlink message without the
IFLA_IPTUN_PROTO attribute.
No effective functional change, just refactoring and preparation for
later change.
With 9ccc369ff3, PersistLeases= is
disabled on the host side virtual interfaces for containers.
However, even it is not necessary to save the leases for containers
on a persistent storage, still we should save them on somewhere.
Otherwise, leases will be lost when networkd on the host is restarted
or the host side interface is reconfigured.
This introduce PersistLeases=runtime to save and load leases on runtime
storage.
Add the following network option to enable BOOTP:
[DHCPv4]
Bootp=yes
This will allow a two message request / reply sequence that doesn't
require DHCP message types.

Add a --now option that starts the program instantly, instead of waiting for a
connection on the socket. This is useful, for instance, when developing:
Say I have a Rust, socket-activated web service. I can test it with:
systemd-socket-activate -l 8080 --fdname=http cargo run
However this delays running the service (which potentially involves compilation)
to when I try to connect to it, which wastes time. Since it delays compilation,
I also don't see any warning or errors in the code until it gets a connection
either.
The name's now a bit of a misnomer, since starting the service immediately isn't
really socket activation, but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/⁻
