Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 254d1313ae tree-wide: use -EBADF for fd initialization
-1 was used everywhere, but -EBADF or -EBADFD started being used in various
places. Let's make things consistent in the new style.

Note that there are two candidates:
EBADF 9 Bad file descriptor
EBADFD 77 File descriptor in bad state

Since we're initializating the fd, we're just assigning a value that means
"no fd yet", so it's just a bad file descriptor, and the first errno fits
better. If instead we had a valid file descriptor that became invalid because
of some operation or state change, the other errno would fit better.

In some places, initialization is dropped if unnecessary.

Lennart Poettering 7176f06c9e basic: split out dev_t related calls into new devno-util.[ch]
No actual code changes, just splitting out of some dev_t handling
related calls from stat-util.[ch], they are quite a number already, and
deserve their own module now I think.

Also, try to settle on the name "devnum" as the name for the concept,
instead of "devno" or "dev" or "devid". "devnum" is the name exported in
udev APIs, hence probably best to stick to that. (this just renames a
few symbols to "devum", local variables are left untouched, to make the
patch not too invasive)

No actual code changes.

Lennart Poettering 7be4b23649 efi-loader: split efi-api.[ch] from efi-loader.[ch]
Some refactoring: split efi-loader.[ch] in two: isolate the calls that
implement out boot loader interface spec, and those which implement
access to upstream UEFI firmware features.

They are quite different in nature and behaviour, and even semantically
it makes to keep these two separate. At the very least because the
previous name "efi-loader.[ch]" suggests all was about loader-specific
APIs, but much of it is generic uefi stuff...

While we are at it, I renamed a bunch of return parameters to follow our
usual ret_xyz naming. But besides renaming no real code changes.

Lennart Poettering e94830c0a1 shared: split out ESP/XBOOTLDR search stuff from bootspec.c
The code is quite different from the rest of bootspec.c, with different
deps and stuff. There's even a /***/ line to separate the two parts.
Given how large the file already is, let#s just split it into two.

No code changes, just some splitting out.

Lennart Poettering f63b5ad935 boot: suppress XBOOTLDR if same device as ESP when enumerating entries
On my local system I linked up the ESP and XBOOTLDR partitions, and
ended up with duplicate entries being listed. Try hard to detect that
and only enumerate entries in the ESP if it turns out that both dirs
have the same dev_t.

This should detect both bind mounted and symlinked cases and should make
our list output less confusing.

Lennart Poettering 2f82562bad alloc-util: add strdupa_safe() + strndupa_safe() and use it everywhere
Let's define two helpers strdupa_safe() + strndupa_safe() which do the
same as their non-safe counterparts, except that they abort if called
with allocations larger than ALLOCA_MAX.

This should ensure that all our alloca() based allocations are subject
to this limit.

afaics glibc offers three alloca() based APIs: alloca() itself,
strndupa() + strdupa(). With this we have now replacements for all of
them, that take the limit into account.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 04499a70fb Drop the text argument from assert_not_reached()
In general we almost never hit those asserts in production code, so users see
them very rarely, if ever. But either way, we just need something that users
can pass to the developers.

We have quite a few of those asserts, and some have fairly nice messages, but
many are like "WTF?" or "???" or "unexpected something". The error that is
printed includes the file location, and function name. In almost all functions
there's at most one assert, so the function name alone is enough to identify
the failure for a developer. So we don't get much extra from the message, and
we might just as well drop them.

Dropping them makes our code a tiny bit smaller, and most importantly, improves
development experience by making it easy to insert such an assert in the code
without thinking how to phrase the argument.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek e6f055cbc4 basic/efivars: replace dynanamic creation of efivar names with static strings
Creating those string dynamically at runtime is slow and unnecessary.
Let's use static strings with a bit of macro magic and the let the compiler
coalesce as much as possible.

$ size build/src/shared/libsystemd-shared-248.so{.old,}
text data bss dec hex	filename
2813453 94572 4584	2912609 2c7161	build/src/shared/libsystemd-shared-248.so.old
2812309 94564 4584	2911457 2c6ce1	build/src/shared/libsystemd-shared-248.so

A nice side-effect is that the same form is used everywhere, so it's easier to
figure out all variables that are used, and where each specific variable is
used.

C.f. 2b0445262a.

Note: 'const char *foo = alloca(…);' seems OK. Our coding style document and
alloca(3) only warn against using alloca() in function invocations. Declaring
both stack variable and alloca at the same time should be fine: no matter in
which order they happen, i.e. if the pointer variable is above the contents,
or the contents are above the pointer, or even if the pointer is elided by the
compiler, everything should be fine.

Luca Boccassi c2b2df604b tree-wide: avoid uninitialized warning on _cleanup_ variables
With some versions of the compiler, the _cleanup_ attr makes it think
the variable might be freed/closed when uninitialized, even though it
cannot happen. The added cost is small enough to be worth the benefit,
and optimized builds will help reduce it even further.

Daan De Meyer bc556335b1 tree-wide: Drop custom formatting for print() help messages
I think this formatting was originally used because it simplified
adding new options to the help messages. However, these days, most
tools their help message end with "\nSee the %s for details.\n" so
the final line almost never has to be edited which eliminates the
benefit of the custom formatting used for printf() help messages.
Let's make things more consistent and use the same formatting for
printf() help messages that we use everywhere else.

Lennart Poettering 353b2baa20 tree-wide: clean up --help texts a bit
This cleans up and unifies the outut of --help texts a bit:

1. Highlight the human friendly description string, not the command
line via ANSI sequences. Previously both this description string and
the brief command line summary was marked with the same ANSI
highlight sequence, but given we auto-page to less and less does not
honour multi-line highlights only the command line summary was
affectively highlighted. Rationale: for highlighting the description
instead of the command line: the command line summary is relatively
boring, and mostly the same for out tools, the description on the
other hand is pregnant, important and captions the whole thing and
   hence deserves highlighting.

2. Always suffix "Options" with ":" in the help text

3. Rename "Flags" → "Options" in one case

4. Move commands to the top in a few cases

5. add coloring to many more help pages

6. Unify on COMMAND instead of {COMMAND} in the command line summary.
Some tools did it one way, others the other way. I am not sure what
precisely {} is supposed to mean, that uppercasing doesn't, hence
let's simplify and stick to the {}-less syntax

And minor other tweaks.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 0bb2f0f10e util-lib: split shared/efivars into basic/efivars and shared/efi-loader

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek ded3a40301 bless-boot: drop must_be_root() checks
If we lack permissions, we will fail anyway. But by not doing the artifial
check, we get more information. For example, on my machine, I see
$ build/systemd-bless-boot good
Not booted with boot counting in effect.

while "Need to be root" is actually untrue, because being root doesn't change
the outcome in any way.

Letting the operation fail on the actual error makes it easier to do test runs:
we *know* the command will fail, but we want to see what the first step would
be.

Not doing the articial check makes it also easier to do create alternative
security arrangements, for example where the directories are mounted with
special ownership mode and an otherwise unprivileged user can perform certain
operations.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek baaa35ad70 coccinelle: make use of SYNTHETIC_ERRNO
Ideally, coccinelle would strip unnecessary braces too. But I do not see any
option in coccinelle for this, so instead, I edited the patch text using
search&replace to remove the braces. Unfortunately this is not fully automatic,
in particular it didn't deal well with if-else-if-else blocks and ifdefs, so
there is an increased likelikehood be some bugs in such spots.

I also removed part of the patch that coccinelle generated for udev, where we
returns -1 for failure. This should be fixed independently.
