This commit moves the io.systemd.Unit.StartTransient tests into
the right place in TEST-74-AUX-UTILS.varlinkctl-unit.sh.
Thanks to Ivan Kruglov for suggesting this.
This commit move the erros in StartTransient from
VARLINK_ERROR_UNIT_BAD_SETTING to SD_VARLINK_ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER
and it also ensures we have the bad field in the error.
Thanks to Ivan Kruglov for suggesting this.
This commit adds more writable fields to the io.systemd.Unit.StartTransient
varlink method. With this its possible to set:
User,Group,SupplementaryGroups,Nice values.
Plus tests for them.
Just like for the unsupported/bad exec_fields we should show
a message about what field is bad for service parameters. This
commit adds it using the same pattern. The JSON parser works in
fail-fast mode so we only display the first bad field (and
it depends on the parser what it finds first).
This commit adds support to set `Environment` in the
`io.systemd.Unit.StartTransient` varlink call.
The behavior is similar to D-Bus, i.e. a `null` or `[]` clears the
environment. This is not needed for StartTransient() as there the env
always starts empty but it seems a good property to have if this is
reused.
This commit adds setting the WorkingDirectory to the
`io.systemd.Unit.StartTransient` varlink call. This is a
first step towards more complete StartTransient in varlink.
The goal is to be as close as possible to the D-Bus parameters.
The exception is WorkingDirectory which is an object here so that
we avoid the `-` prefixes and use a more type-safe approach by
making it an explicit `missingOK` parameter.
The key names stay the same as the D-Bus properties (PascalCase).
If there are no equivalent D-Bus properties the native varlink
convention of camelCase is used.
The new "varlinkctl --more StartTransient" subtest pipes a JSON-SEQ
stream of multiple records into "jq --seq -e ...". CentOS 9
ships jq 1.6, where -e only inspects the last input record's output:
when the trailing record (the final reply) doesn't match the
"select()" filter, jq exits non-zero even though earlier records
match, so the test fails.
Use --slurp which collapses the records into an array first and
returns a single bool.

Useful for packaging scripts, when units are removed.
When multiple markers are assigned without +/-, the last one wins.
When using +/-, the job merging logic is followed to the extent possible.
As announced by a few releases now, finally drop support for
sysvinit scripts.
Keep rc-local generator for now, as it's really a distinct
feature even though from the same era.
When a TTY is attached to the test unit, grep -q will generate SIGPIPE
for the previous command in the pipeline which in combo with `pipefail`
will cause the command to fail with exit status 141 which will fail the
test.
Replace with >/dev/null to avoid this from happening.

The --global flag has been broken since commit
d77d42ed3a, which added a
blanket restriction on acquiring D-Bus connections when
arg_runtime_scope is RUNTIME_SCOPE_GLOBAL. This was done to prevent
crashes, but inadvertently broke legitimate use cases like 'systemctl
edit --global' and 'systemctl cat --global'.
The issue is that verb_edit() and verb_cat() were unconditionally
calling acquire_bus(), which triggers the restriction and fails with
"--global is not supported for this operation."
This commit fixes the issue by making bus acquisition conditional,
following the same pattern used in verb_enable():
- Only acquire the bus when install_client_side() returns NO (i.e., for
system and user scopes)
- For client-side operations (--global, --root, etc.), skip bus
acquisition and use mangle_names() instead of expand_unit_names()
- Update find_paths_to_edit() and verb_cat() to handle NULL bus by
forcing client-side path lookups
- Skip bus-dependent checks (unit_is_masked, need_daemon_reload) when
bus is NULL
This allows both 'systemctl edit --global' and 'systemctl cat --global'
to work correctly by performing all operations client-side without
requiring a connection to the system or user manager.
Fixes#31272
Make bus acquisition conditional in verb_edit() and verb_cat(), following
the same pattern used in verb_enable(). When install_client_side() returns
non-zero (indicating --global, --root, offline, or similar scenarios), skip
acquiring a D-Bus connection and perform all operations client-side.
Changes:
- Only acquire bus when install_client_side() returns NO
- Use mangle_names() instead of expand_unit_names() in client-side mode
- Pass force_client_side flag based on bus availability
- Skip bus-dependent operations (need_daemon_reload, etc.) when bus is NULL
This allows 'systemctl edit --global' and 'systemctl cat --global' to work
correctly, fixing the regression introduced by commit d77d42ed3a.
Test cases added to verify:
- Creating and editing global user units with --runtime
- Reading global units with cat --global
- Proper detection and rejection of masked units in client-side mode
- Tests use /run/ instead of /etc/ for safer temporary testing

There is a TOCTOU in the `systemctl status` where a unit might change
its state during the initial ListUnitsByPatterns call and the subsequent
individual GetAll calls, which then makes the systemctl call fail even
if the unit that was originally pulled in was active/running:

Since in this case we care mostly about the code paths the command
triggers, ignore its exit code as we do for the previous one.

`systemctl show`'s `--timestamp` flag is supposed to reformat all
timestamp-based properties. However, the logic for detecting these
properties was incomplete and only checked if the name ended in
Timestamp.
Expand the check to explicitly include some non-"timestamp" named
properties that really are timestamps.

This also makes shebang always use env command, and drops unnecessary
'bash -c' or 'sh -c' when a signle command is invoked in the shell,
like sleep or echo.
Our baseline is v5.4 and cgroup v2 is enforced now,
which means CPU accounting is cheap everywhere without
requiring any controller, hence just remove the directive.
If a symlink is leftover, still allow cleaning it up via 'disable'. This
happens when a unit is stopped and removed, but not disabled, and a reload
has already happened. At that point, cleaning up the old symlinks becomes
impossible through the APIs, and needs to be done manually. Always allow
cleaning up symlinks, if they exist, by only erroring out if there is an
OOM.

CPUQuota= can deal with float percentages perfectly fine these days
(up to two places after the dot), so let's take that into account
when serializing the value to the transient unit file so we don't lose
precision when specifying e.g. "CPUQuota=0.5%".
Having these named differently than the test itself mostly creates
unecessary confusion and makes writing logic against the tests harder
so let's rename the testsuite-xx units and scripts to just use the
test name itself.
