Let's not leak details from src/shared and src/libsystemd into
src/basic, even though you can't actually do anything useful with
just forward declarations from src/shared.
The sd-forward.h header is put in src/libsystemd/sd-common as we
don't have a directory for shared internal headers for libsystemd
yet.
Let's also rename forward.h to basic-forward.h to keep things
self-explanatory.
Background: Fedora/RHEL are switching to sysusers.d metadata for creation of
users and groups for system users defined by packages
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RPMSuportForSystemdSysusers).
Packages carry sysusers files. During package installation, rpm calls an
program to execute on this config. This program may either be
/usr/lib/rpm/sysusers.sh which calls useradd/groupadd, or
/usr/bin/systemd-sysusers. To match the functionality provided by
useradd/groupadd from the shadow-utils project, systemd-sysusers must emit
audit events so that it provides a drop-in replacement.
systemd-sysuers will emit audit events AUDIT_ADD_USER/AUDIT_ADD_GROUP when
adding users and groups. The operation "names" are copied from shadow-utils in
Fedora (which has a patch to change them from the upstream version), so the
format of the events that is generated on success should be identical.
The helper code is shared between sysusers and utmp-wtmp. I changed the
audit_fd variable to be unconditional. This way we can avoid ugly iffdefery
every time the variable would be used. The cost is that 4 bytes of unused
storage might be present. This is negligible, and the compiler might even be
able to optimize that away if it inlines things.
The auditing subsystem is still not virtualized for containers, hence the two
values don't really make sense inside them, they will just leak
information from outside into the container. Hence don't make use of the
data if we detect we are run inside of a container.
This has visible effects: logind will no longer try to reuse the
auditing session ids as its own session ids when run inside a container.
While are at it, modernize the calls in more ways:
1. switch to pidref behaviour, all but one of our uses are using pidref
anyway already.
2. use read_virtual_file() + proc_mounted()
3. reasonable distinguish ENOENT errors when reading the process proc
files: distinguish the case where /proc is not mounted, from the case
where the process is already gone, from where auditing is not enabled
in the kernel build.
These lines are generally out-of-date, incomplete and unnecessary. With
SPDX and git repository much more accurate and fine grained information
about licensing and authorship is available, hence let's drop the
per-file copyright notice. Of course, removing copyright lines of others
is problematic, hence this commit only removes my own lines and leaves
all others untouched. It might be nicer if sooner or later those could
go away too, making git the only and accurate source of authorship
information.
This part of the copyright blurb stems from the GPL use recommendations:
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.en.html
The concept appears to originate in times where version control was per
file, instead of per tree, and was a way to glue the files together.
Ultimately, we nowadays don't live in that world anymore, and this
information is entirely useless anyway, as people are very welcome to
copy these files into any projects they like, and they shouldn't have to
change bits that are part of our copyright header for that.
hence, let's just get rid of this old cruft, and shorten our codebase a
bit.
Files which are installed as-is (any .service and other unit files, .conf
files, .policy files, etc), are left as is. My assumption is that SPDX
identifiers are not yet that well known, so it's better to retain the
extended header to avoid any doubt.
I also kept any copyright lines. We can probably remove them, but it'd nice to
obtain explicit acks from all involved authors before doing that.
Let's add a proper validation function, since validation isn't entirely
trivial. Make use of it where applicable. Also make use of
AUDIT_SESSION_INVALID where we need a marker for an invalid audit
session.
The files are named too generically, so that they might conflict with
the upstream project headers. Hence, let's add a "-util" suffix, to
clarify that this are just our utility headers and not any official
upstream headers.
