David Herrmann c0e7906d20 bus: report builtins in GetManagedObjects() (#5799)
We already report builtin interfaces with InterfacesAdded and InterfacesRemoved. However,
we never reported them in GetManagedObjects(). This might end up confusing callers that
want to use those interfaces (or simply rely on the interface count to be coherent).

Report the builtins for all objects that are queried.

David Herrmann 34b52450c5 hostname: add 'convertible' chassis type
Add the 'convertible' type to the set of allowed chassis. This applies
to all devices that can be transformed by the user from laptop style to
tablet style.

This does not add any auto-detection, yet. It only makes 'set-chassis'
accept 'convertible' as valid input.

David Herrmann 3a04b789c6 sd-hwdb: order properties by origin
If we find duplicates in a property-lookup, make sure to order them by
their origin. That is, matches defined "later" take precedence over
earlier matches. The "later"-order is defined by file-name + line-number
combination. That is, if a match is defined below another one in the
same hwdb file, it takes precedence, same as if it is defined in a file
ordered after another one.

David Herrmann 698c5a176e hwdb: store file-name and file-number with properties
Extend the hwdb to store the source file-name and file-number for each

David Herrmann a832ab6f99 login: fix re-use of users
If the last reference to a user is released, we queue stop-jobs for the
user-service and slice. Only once those are finished, we drop the
user-object. However, if a new session is opened before the user object is
fully dropped, we currently incorrectly re-use the object. This has the
effect, that we get stale sessions without a valid "systemd --user"
instance.

Fix this by properly allowing user_start() to be called, even if
user->stopping is true.

Just like user->slice, there is no reason to store the unit name in /run,

David Herrmann 6230bf750a login: keep user->slice constant
Currently, we allocate user->slice when starting a slice, but we never
release it. This is incompatible if we want to re-use a user object once

the user object and use "u->started || u->stopping" as an indication
whether the slice is actually available on pid1 or not.

David Herrmann f9e4283df3 login: simply XDG_RUNTIME_DIR management
Lets not pretend we support changing XDG_RUNTIME_DIR via logind state
files. There is no reason to ever write the string into /run, as we
allocate it statically based on the UID, anyway. Lets stop that and just
allocate the runtime_path in "struct User" at all times.

We keep writing it into the /run state to make sure pam_systemd of
previous installs can still read it. However, pam_systemd is now fixed to
allocate it statically as well, so we can safely remove that some time in
the future.

Last but not least: If software depends on systemd, they're more than free
to assume /run/user/$uid is their runtime dir. Lets not require sane
applications to query the environment to get their runtime dir. As long as
applications know their login-UID, they should be safe to deduce the
runtime dir.

David Herrmann b215b0ede1 core: fix priority ordering in notify-handling
Currently, we dispatch NOTIFY messages in a tight loop. Regardless how
much data is incoming, we always dispatch everything that is queued.
This, however, completely breaks priority event-handling of sd-event.
When dispatching one NOTIFY event, another completely different event
might fire, or might be queued by the NOTIFY handling. However, this
event will not get dispatched until all other further NOTIFY messages are
handled. Those might even arrive _after_ the other event fired, and as
such completely break priority ordering of sd-event (which several code
paths rely on).

Break this by never dispatching multiple messages. Just return after each
message that was read and let sd-event handle everything else.

(The patch looks scarier that it is. It basically just drops the for(;;)
 loop and re-indents the loop-content.)

David Herrmann 6fe869c251 sd-event: don't provide priority stability
Currently, we guarantee that if two event-sources with the same priority
fire at the same time, they're always dispatched in the same order. While
this might sound nice in theory, there's is little benefit in providing
stability on that level. We have no control over the order the events are
reported, hence, we cannot guarantee that we get notified about both at
the same time.

By dropping the stability guarantee, we loose roughly 10% Heap swaps in
the prioq on a desktop cold-boot. Krzysztof Kotlenga even reported up to
20% on his tests. This sounds worth optimizing, so drop the stability
guarantee.

David Herrmann 2d7c6aa20c core: make setup_pam() synchronous
If we spawn a unit with a non-empty 'PAMName=', we fork off a
child-process _inside_ the unit, known as '(sd-pam)', which watches the
session. It waits for the main-process to exit and then finishes it via
pam_close_session(3).

However, the '(sd-pam)' setup is highly asynchronous. There is no
guarantee that process gets spawned before we finish the unit setup.
Therefore, there might be a root-owned process inside of the cgroup of
the unit, thus causing cg_migrate() to error-out with EPERM.

This patch makes setup_pam() synchronous and waits for the '(sd-pam)'
setup to finish before continuing. This guarantees that setresuid(2) was
at least tried before we continue with the child setup of the real unit.
Note that if setresuid(2) fails, we already warn loudly about it. You
really must make sure that you own the passed user if using 'PAMName='.
It seems very plausible to rely on that assumption.

David Herrmann 44eb1adda9 sd-bus: make introspection data non-recursive
Currently, our introspection data looks like this:

        <node>
         <interface name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Peer">
           ...
         </interface>

         </interface>
         <interface name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties">
           ...
         </interface>
         <node name="org"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/user"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/user/self"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/user/_1000"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/seat"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/seat/self"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/seat/seat0"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/session"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/session/self"/>
         <node name="org/freedesktop/login1/session/c1"/>
        </node>

(ordered alphabetically for better visibility)

This is grossly incorrect. The spec says that we're allowed to return
non-directed children, however, it does not allow us to return data
recursively in multiple parents. If we return "org", then we must not
return anything else that starts with "org/".

It is unclear, whether we can include child-nodes as a tree. Moreover, it
is usually not what the caller wants. Hence, this patch changes sd-bus to
never return introspection data recursively. Instead, only a single
child-layer is returned.

This patch relies on enumerators to never return hierarchies. If someone
registers an enumerator via sd_bus_add_enumerator, they better register
sub-enumerators if they support *TRUE* hierarchies. Each enumerator is
treated as a single layer and not filtered.
Enumerators are still allowed to return nested data. However, that data
is still required to be a single hierarchy. For instance, returning
"/org/foo" and "/com/bar" is fine, but including "/com" or "/org" in that
dataset is not.
This should be the default for enumerators and I see no reason to filter
in sd-bus. Moreover, filtering that data-set would require to sort the
strv by path and then do prefix-filtering. This is O(n log n), which
would be fine, but still better to avoid.

Fixes #664.

David Herrmann 54c1f2d761 CODING_STYLE: mandate alphabetical include order
systemd-internal headers must not rely on include order. That means, they
either must contain forward-declarations of used types/functions, or they
must include all dependencies on their own. Therefore, there is no reason
to mandate an include order on the call-side.

However, global includes should always be ordered first. We don't want
local definitions to leak into global includes, possible changing their
behavior. Apparently, namespacing is a complex problem that people are
incapable of implementing properly..

Apart from "global before local", there is no reason to mandate a random
include order (which we happen to do right now). Instead, mandate
alphabetical ordering. The current rules do not have any benefit at all.
They neither reduce include-complexity, nor allow easy auditing of
include files. But with alphabetical ordering, we get duplicate-detection
for free, it gets *much much* easier to figure out whether a header is
already included, and it is trivial to add new headers.

David Herrmann 64ce4ad758 sd-bus: derive uid from cgroup if possible
Whenever we run in a user context, sd_bus_{default_user,open_user}() and
friends should always connect to the user-bus of the current context,
instead of deriving the uid from getuid(). This allows us running
programs via sudo/su, without the nasty side-effect of accidentally
connecting to the root user-bus.

This patch enforces the idea of making su/sudo *not* opening sessions by
default. That is, all they do is raising privileges, but keeping
everything set as before. You can still use su/sudo to open real sessions
by requesting a login-session (or loading pam_systemd otherwise).
However, in this case XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= will not be set (as usual in these
cases), hence, you will not be able to connect to *any* user-bus.

Long story short: With this patch applied, both:
        - ./busctl --user
        - sudo ./busctl --user
..will successfully connect to the user-bus of the local user.

David Herrmann ed15589c98 bus-proxy: increase NOFILE limit
The bus-proxy manages the kdbus connections of all users on the system
(regarding the system bus), hence, it needs an elevated NOFILE.
Otherwise, a single user can trigger ENFILE by opening NOFILE connections
to the bus-proxy.

Note that the bus-proxy still does per-user accounting, indirectly via
the proxy/fake API of kdbus. Hence, the effective per-user limit is not
raised by this. However, we now prevent one user from consuming the whole
FD limit of the shared proxy.

Also note that there is no *perfect* way to set this. The proxy is a
shared object, so it needs a larger NOFILE limit than the highest limit
of all users. This limit can be changed dynamically, though. Hence, we
cannot protect against it. However, a raised NOFILE limit is a privilege,
so we just treat it as such and basically allow these privileged users to
be able to consume more resources than normal users (and, maybe, cause
some limits to be exceeded by this).

Right now, kdbus hard-codes 1024 max connections per user on each bus.
However, we *must not* rely on this. This limits could be easily dropped
entirely, as the NOFILE limit is a suitable limit on its on.

David Herrmann 3df49c2877 login: support user-bus on dbus1
dbus-1.10 was just released, including systemd units to run
`dbus-daemon --session` as systemd user unit. This allows using a
user-bus with dbus1, just like we do per default with kdbus.

All the dbus libraries have already been fixed long ago to use the
user-bus as default. Hence, there's no need to set
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS= if we use the user-bus. However, gdm and
friends continue to spawn a session bus if this variable is not set
(instead of checking for the existence of the user-bus). Hence, we force
the user-bus, if it is available, in pam_systemd. Once gdm and friends
are fixed, we can continue to drop this again. However, that might take
a while.

With this in place, all that is needed to make the user-bus work is:
    `systemctl --global enable dbus.socket`

If dbus.socket is not enabled, the legacy session-bus is still used.

David Herrmann e6b18ffaea sd-dhcp: don't randomly ref objects
In our API design, getter-functions don't ref objects. Calls like
foo_get_bar() will not ref 'bar'. We never do that and there is no real
reason to do it in single threaded APIs. If you need a ref-count, you
better take it yourself *BEFORE* doing anything else on the parent object
(as this might invalidate your pointer).

Right now, sd_dhcp?_get_lease() refs the lease it returns. A lot of
code-paths in systemd do not expect this and thus leak the lease
reference. Fix this by changing the API to not ref returned objects.

David Herrmann 11f254be0c bus-proxy: make StartServiceByName synchronous
The StartServiceByName() call was provided by dbus-daemon to activate a
service without sending a message. On receiption, dbus-daemon schedules
an activation request (different modes are supported) and sends back the
reply once activation is done.

With kdbus, we marked StartServiceByName() as deprecated. There is no
real reason to start services explicitly. Instead, applications should
just *use* the service and rely on it being activated implicitly.
However, we provide compatibility with dbus-daemon and implement
StartServiceByName() on the proxy via a call to
org.freedesktop.DBus.Peer.Ping() on the destination. This will activate
the peer implicitly as part of the no-op Ping() method call (regardless
whether the peer actually implements that call).

Now, the problem is, StartServiceByName() was synchronous on dbus-daemon
but isn't on bus-proxy. Hence, on return, there is no guarantee that
ListNames includes the activated name. As this is required by some
applications, we need to make this synchronous.

This patch makes the proxy track the Ping() method call and send the
reply of StartServiceByName() only once Ping() returned. We do not look
at possible errors of Ping(), as there is no strict requirement for the
peer to implement org.freedesktop.DBus.Peer. Furthermore, any interesting
error should have already been caught by sd_bus_send() before.

Note:
        This race was triggered by gdbus. The gdbus-proxy implementation
        relies on a name to be available after StartServiceByName()
        returns. This is highly fragile and should be dropped by gdbus.
        Even if the call is synchronous, there is no reason whatsoever to
        assume the service did not exit-on-idle before ListNames()
        returns.
        However, this race is much less likely than the startup race, so
        we try to be compatible to dbus-daemon now.

David Herrmann 03ebf5e89b sd-bus: fix encoding/decoding gvariant root container
The gvariant root container contains a 'variant' at the end, which embeds
the whole message body. This variant *must* contain a structure so we are
compatible to dbus1. Otherwise, it could encode at most 1 type, instead
of a full signature.

Our gvariant message parser already parses the variant-content as a
structure, so we're mostly good. However, it does *not* include the
opening and closing parantheses, nor does it parse them.

This patch fixes the decoder to verify a message contains the
parantheses, and also make the encoder add those parantheses into the
marshaled message.

David Herrmann d537694a98 terminal: drop unfinished code
This drops the libsystemd-terminal and systemd-consoled code for various
reasons:

 * It's been sitting there unfinished for over a year now and won't get
   finished any time soon.

 * Since its initial creation, several parts need significant rework: The
   input handling should be replaced with the now commonly used libinput,
   the drm accessors should coordinate the handling of mode-object
   hotplugging (including split connectors) with other DRM users, and the
   internal library users should be converted to sd-device and friends.

 * There is still significant kernel work required before sd-console is
   really useful. This includes, but is not limited to, simpledrm and
   drmlog.

 * The authority daemon is needed before all this code can be used for
   real. And this will definitely take a lot more time to get done as
   no-one else is currently working on this, but me.

 * kdbus maintenance has taken up way more time than I thought and it has
   much higher priority. I don't see me spending much time on the
   terminal code in the near future.

If anyone intends to hack on this, please feel free to contact me. I'll
gladly help you out with any issues. Once kdbus and authorityd are
finished (whenever that will be..) I'll definitely pick this up again. But
until then, lets reduce compile times and maintenance efforts on this code

David Herrmann 2d5c8a2756 sd-bus: fix path of object-manager signals
Each signal of the ObjectManager interface carries the path of the object
in question as an argument. Therefore, a caller will deduce the object
this signal is generated for, by parsing the _argument_. A caller will
*not* use the object-path of the message itself (i.e., message->path).
This is done on purpose, so the caller can rely on message->path to be
the path of the actual object-manager that generated this signal, instead
of the path of the object that triggered this signal.

This commit fixes all InterfacesAdded/Removed signals to use the path of
the closest object-manager as message->path. 'closest' in this case means
closest parent with at least one object-manager registered.

This fix raises the question what happens if we stack object-managers in
a hierarchy. Two implementations are possible: First, we report each
object only on the nearest object-manager. Second, we report it on each
parent object-manager. This patch chooses the former. This is compatible
with other existing ObjectManager implementations, which are required to
call GetManagedObjects() recursively on each object they find, which
implements the ObjectManager interface.

David Herrmann da770c386f logind: prefer new sessions over older ones on VT switches
Our seat->positions[] array keeps track of the 'preferred' session on a
VT. The only situation this is used, is to select the session to activate
when a VT is activated. In the normal case, there's only one session per
VT so the selection is trivial.

Older greeters, however, implement take-overs when they start sessions on
the same VT that the greeter ran on. We recently limited such take-overs
to VTs where a greeter is running on, to force people to never share VTs
in new code that is written.

For legacy reasons, we need to be compatible to old greeters, though.
Hence, we allow those greeters to implement take-over. In such take-overs,
however, we should really make sure that the new sessions gets preferred
over the old one under all circumstances. Hence, make sure we override
the previous preferred session with a new session.

David Herrmann e23bc0e7ca bus-proxy: never pass on unmatched broadcasts
The lovely libvirtd goes into crazy mode if it receives broadcasts that
it didn't subscribe to. With bus-proxyd, this might happen in 2 cases:

    1) The kernel passes us an unmatched signal due to a false-positive
       bloom-match.

    2) We generate NameOwnerChanged/NameAcquired/NameLost locally even
       though the peer didn't subscribe to it.

dbus-daemon is reliable in what signals it passes on. So make sure we
follow that style. Never ever send a signal to a local peer if it doesn't
match an installed filter of that peer.

David Herrmann 443a559813 sd-bus: fix gvariant structure encoding
In gvariant, all fixed-size objects need to be sized a multiple of their
alignment. If a structure has only fixed-size members, it is required to
be fixed size itself. If you imagine a structure like (ty), you have an
8-byte member followed by an 1-byte member. Hence, the overall inner-size
is 9. The alignment of the object is 8, though. Therefore, the specs
mandates final padding after fixed-size structures, to make sure it's
sized a multiple of its alignment (=> 16).

On the gvariant decoder side, we already account for this in
bus_gvariant_get_size(), as we apply overall padding to the size of the
structure. Therefore, our decoder correctly skips such final padding when
parsing fixed-size structure.

On the gvariant encoder side, however, we don't account for this final
padding. This patch fixes the structure and dict-entry encoders to
properly place such padding at the end of non-uniform fixed-size
structures.

The problem can be easily seen by running:
    $ busctl --user monitor
and
    $ busctl call --user org.freedesktop.systemd1 / org.foobar foobar "(ty)" 777 8

The monitor will fail to parse the message and print an error. With this
patch applied, everything works fine again.

This patch also adds a bunch of test-cases to force non-uniform
structures with non-pre-aligned positions.

Thanks to Jan Alexander Steffens <jan.steffens@gmail.com> for spotting
this and narrowing it down to non-uniform gvariant structures. Fixes #597.

that our enumerators shortcut the object tree.
