Mike Gilbert 2fa645f1cc meson: don't search PATH for telinit (#7770)
On a typical system running systemd, the telinit in PATH is very likely to be a symlink
to systemctl. Setting TELINIT to this may result in an infinite recursion if telinit is called
and sd_booted() == 0. This may commonly occur in a chroot environment.

Bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/642724

[zj:
The path was originally hardcoded as "/lib/upstart/telinit", but was made configurable without
changing the default in 4ad61fd180. Then the default was
changed to `/lib/sysvinit/telinit` in abaaabf40a. Then it
started being autodetected when meson support was added in
5c23128dab. This patch restores the behaviour that was
implemented in configure.ac at the time of its removal.]

Mike Gilbert 521251d275 sysctl: use raw file descriptor in sysctl_write (#7753)
The kernel returns specific error codes which may be lost if we use the
libc buffered io functions.

Mike Gilbert d31b0033b7 basic: detect_vm_cpuid: use gcc's __get_cpuid() function (#7758)
The __get_cpuid() function includes a safety check to ensure that
executing the cpuid instruction is valid/safe.

This method also works with clang.

Mike Gilbert 8f968c7321 Revert "README: document that gperf 3.1 is required for building now" (#6541)
This reverts commit 4f5e972279.

Building with gperf 3.0 works just fine; we had an autoconf check to
determine the correct data types, and this check was ported to meson.

Mike Gilbert 496c486f12 test-fs-util: re-order test_readlink_and_make_absolute and test_get_files_in_directory (#6288)
test_readlink_and_make_absolute switches to a temp directory, and then
removes it.

test_get_files_in_directory calls opendir(".") from a directory that has
been removed from the filesystem.

This call sequence triggers a bug in Gentoo's sandbox library. This
library attempts to resolve the "." to an absolute path, and aborts when
it ultimately fails to do so.

Re-ordering the calls works around the issue until the sandbox library
can be fixed to more gracefully deal with this.

Mike Gilbert c9f7b4d356 build-sys: add check for gperf lookup function signature (#5055)
gperf-3.1 generates lookup functions that take a size_t length
parameter instead of unsigned int. Test for this at configure time.
