It turns out checking sysfs is not 100% reliable to figure out whether
the firmware had TPM2 support enabled or not. For example with EDK2 arm64, the
default upstream build config bundles TPM2 support with SecureBoot support,
so if the latter is disabled, TPM2 is also unavailable. But still, the ACPI
TPM2 table is created just as if it was enabled. So /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/TPM2
exists and looks correct, but there are no measurements, neither the firmware
nor the loader/stub can do them, and /sys/kernel/security/tpm0/binary_bios_measurements
does not exist.
The loader can use the apposite UEFI protocol to check, which is a more
definitive answer. Given userspace can also make use of this information, export
the bitmask with the list of active banks as-is. If it's not 0, then we can be
sure a working TPM2 was available in EFI mode.

anymore to set up manual overrides and manually call in the shim-specific
lock protocol or to set shim-specific EFIVAR to make addons work or to load

Check if the new protocol added in v16 is present, and if so, skip
all that. Once versions < 16 are no longer supported/revoked, all
the code can be dropped entirely.
When linux_exec() fails, the initrd pages cleanup attempts to run,
and an assertion is triggered:
../src/boot/linux.c:125@linux_exec: Error loading kernel image: Security violation
../src/boot/util.h:81@cleanup_pages: Error freeing pages: Not found
../src/boot/log.c:30@efi_assert: systemd-boot: Assertion 'r == EFI_SUCCESS' failed at ../src/boot/util.h:82@cleanup_pages, halting.
(log message is new)
This was introduced by https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/36715
Before that change, given the argument to xmalloc_pages() was passed as EFI_SIZE_TO_PAGES(n_pages), that's
what ended up in Pages.n_pages. After this change, n_pages gets assigned without being transformed by
EFI_SIZE_TO_PAGES, so the cleanup can find them again. That change causes the assertion failure to trigger.
Changing this to .n_pages = EFI_SIZE_TO_PAGES(n_pages) fixes the assertion.

While all distributions agree on where the basic rootfs symlinks
(/bin /sbin /lib) should point to, not all of them agree on the
target of /lib64. Debian and derivatives, expect something different
than Fedora et al. This is mostly due to the different way multiarch
vs multilib are designed.
This can lead to the situation where running systemd-nspawn on Fedora
to boot a Debian container creates an incompatible symlink in the guest
persistent, pre-created and pre-populated root filesystem, causing
issues due to these incompatibilities.
While it would be great if Debian and derivatives had the same
expectations as the rest of the world, this is baked in many places
and not likely to ever be fixable, as the multiarch vs multilib
behaviours are now very entrenched, and changing it would break
compatibilities left and right.
The core purpose of base-filesystem was to allow bringing up a system
with an empty/ephemeral/etc rootfs (and a /usr/ image on top). So as
a workaround, create /lib64 only if we detect that we have created
/bin /lib and /sbin, as that's a sure sign we are booting into an
empty rootfs that needs to be populated.
Conversely, if the filesystem _already_ has /bin /sbin and /lib,
it means it is not ephemeral and it is pre-prepared and persistent,
so it's a good idea to avoid second-guessing the image builder tool
or the package manager and override what it does, and just let them
carry on with the system however they configured it.

The test skips at runtime on the same condition, but that's already too late

NotImplementedError: unknown compressed type: b'zstd\x00\x00'
The zstd library does not support stream decompression, and it
requires the zstd header to contain extra metadata, that the kernel
build does not append:

This appears to be by design:
https://github.com/sergey-dryabzhinsky/python-zstd/issues/53
Switch to python3-zstandard, which works.
Public keys and certificates are not the same, as the latter embeds more
information that the former, and other tools like sd-measure have distinct
parameters for each of them.
Add a new --pcr-certificate= parameter to ukify, and use it to pass certs
down to sd-measure, as an alternative to --pcr-public-key=. Do not allow
specifying both.
