Tejun Heo 4095205ecc core: support "nsdelegate" cgroup v2 mount option (#6294)
cgroup namespace wasn't useful for delegation because it allowed resource
control interface files (e.g. memory.high) to be written from inside the
namespace - this allowed the namespace parent's resource distribution to be
disturbed by its namespace-scoped children.

A new mount option, "nsdelegate", was added to cgroup v2 to address this issue.
The flag is meangingful only when mounting cgroup v2 in the init namespace and
makes a cgroup namespace a delegation boundary. The kernel feature is pending
for v4.13.

This should have been the default behavior on cgroup namespaces and this commit
makes systemd try "nsdelegate" first when trying to mount cgroup v2 and fall
back if the option is not supported.

Note that this has danger of breaking usages which depend on modifying the
parent's resource settings from the namespace root, which isn't a valid thing
to do, but such usages may still exist.

Tejun Heo f08e928720 core: keep supporting cgroup hybrid layout from v232 for live upgrades
v232's cgroup hybrid mode mounted v2 on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd, which
unfortunately broke other tools which expect v1 there. From v233 on, hybrid
mode instead mounts and uses v2 on /sys/fs/cgroup/unified and keeps
/sys/fs/cgroup/systemd on v1 for compatibility with external tools. However,
to keep systemd live upgrades working, v233+ should be able to recognize v232
layout and keep using it.

This patch adds v232 hybrid mode support. If v232 layout is detected,
cg_unified(SYSTEMD_CGRouP_CONTROLLER) keeps returning %true but
cg_hybrid_unified() returns %false. This keeps process management on cgroup v2
but turns off the parallel layout.

Tejun Heo 2977724b09 core: make hybrid cgroup unified mode keep compat /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd hierarchy
Currently the hybrid mode mounts cgroup v2 on /sys/fs/cgroup instead of the v1
name=systemd hierarchy. While this works fine for systemd itself, it breaks
tools which expect cgroup v1 hierarchy on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd.

This patch updates the hybrid mode so that it mounts v2 hierarchy on
/sys/fs/cgroup/unified and keeps v1 "name=systemd" hierarchy on
/sys/fs/cgroup/systemd for compatibility. systemd itself doesn't depend on the
"name=systemd" hierarchy at all. All operations take place on the v2 hierarchy
as before but the v1 hierarchy is kept in sync so that any tools which expect
it to be there can keep doing so. This allows systemd to take advantage of
cgroup v2 process management without requiring other tools to be aware of the
hybrid mode.

The hybrid mode is implemented by mapping the special systemd controller to
/sys/fs/cgroup/unified and making the basic cgroup utility operations -
cg_attach(), cg_create(), cg_rmdir() and cg_trim() - also operate on the
/sys/fs/cgroup/systemd hierarchy whenever the cgroup2 hierarchy is updated.

While a bit messy, this will allow dropping complications from using cgroup v1
for process management a lot sooner than otherwise possible which should make
it a net gain in terms of maintainability.

v2: Fixed !cgns breakage reported by @evverx and renamed the unified mount
    point to /sys/fs/cgroup/unified as suggested by @brauner.

v3: chown the compat hierarchy too on delegation. Suggested by @evverx.

v4: [zj]
- drop the change to default, full "legacy" is still the default.

Tejun Heo b6629c4b9f core: make SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER a special string
SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER is currently defined as "name=systemd" which cgroup
utility functions interpret as a named cgroup hierarchy with the specified
named. With the planned cgroup hybrid mode changes, SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER
would map to different hierarchy names.

This patch makes SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER a special string "_systemd" which is
substituted to "name=systemd" by the cgroup utility functions. This allows the
callers to address the systemd hierarchy without actually specifying the
hierarchy name allowing the cgroup utility functions to map it to whatever is
appropriate.

Note that SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER was already special on full unified cgroup
hierarchy even before this patch.

Tejun Heo 415fc41cea core: simplify cg_[all_]unified()
cg_[all_]unified() test whether a specific controller or all controllers are on
the unified hierarchy. While what's being asked is a simple binary question,
the callers must assume that the functions may fail any time, which
unnecessarily complicates their usages. This complication is unnecessary.
Internally, the test result is cached anyway and there are only a few places
where the test actually needs to be performed.

This patch simplifies cg_[all_]unified().

* cg_[all_]unified() are updated to return bool. If the result can't be
  decided, assertion failure is triggered. Error handlings from their callers
  are dropped.

* cg_unified_flush() is updated to calculate the new result synchrnously and
  return whether it succeeded or not. Places which need to flush the test
  result are updated to test for failure. This ensures that all the following
  cg_[all_]unified() tests succeed.

* Places which expected possible cg_[all_]unified() failures are updated to
  call and test cg_unified_flush() before calling cg_[all_]unified(). This
  includes functions used while setting up mounts during boot and
  manager_setup_cgroup().

Tejun Heo bd15ab41a1 nspawn: fix cgroup mode detection
cgroup mode detection is broken in two different ways.

* detect_unified_cgroup_hierarchy() is called too nested in outer_child().
  sync_cgroup() which is used by run() also needs to know the requested cgroup
  mode but it's currently always getting CGROUP_UNIFIED_UNKNOWN. This makes it
  skip syncing the inner cgroup hierarchy on some config combinations.

   $ cat /proc/self/cgroup | grep systemd
   1:name=systemd:/user.slice/user-0.slice/session-c1.scope

   $ UNIFIED_CGROUP_HIERARCHY=0 SYSTEMD_NSPAWN_USE_CGNS=0 systemd-nspawn -M container
   ...
   [root@container ~]# cat /proc/self/cgroup | grep systemd
   1:name=systemd:/machine.slice/machine-container.x86_64.scope
   $ exit

   $ UNIFIED_CGROUP_HIERARCHY=1 SYSTEMD_NSPAWN_USE_CGNS=0 systemd-nspawn -M container
   [root@container ~]# cat /proc/self/cgroup | grep 0::
   0::/
   $ exit

  Note how the unified hierarchy case's path is not synchronized with the host.
  This for example can cause issues when there are multiple such containers.

  Fixed by moving detect_unified_cgroup_hierarchy() invocation to main().

* inner_child() was invoking cg_unified_flush().  inner_child() executes fully
  scoped and can't determine which cgroup mode the host was in. It doesn't
  make sense to keep flushing the detected mode when the host mode can't
  change.

  Fixed by replacing cg_unified_flush() invocations in outer_child() and
  inner_child() with one in main().

Tejun Heo 7d862ab8c2 core: make settings for unified cgroup hierarchy supersede the ones for legacy hierarchy (#4269)
There are overlapping control group resource settings for the unified and
legacy hierarchies. To help transition, the settings are translated back and
forth. When both versions of a given setting are present, the one matching the
cgroup hierarchy type in use is used. Unfortunately, this is more confusing to
use and document than necessary because there is no clear static precedence.

Update the translation logic so that the settings for the unified hierarchy are
always preferred. systemd.resource-control man page is updated to reflect the
change and reorganized so that the deprecated settings are at the end in its
own section.

Tejun Heo f50582649f logind: update empty and "infinity" handling for [User]TasksMax (#3835)
The parsing functions for [User]TasksMax were inconsistent. Empty string and
"infinity" were interpreted as no limit for TasksMax but not accepted for
UserTasksMax. Update them so that they're consistent with other knobs.

* Empty string indicates the default value.
* "infinity" indicates no limit.

While at it, replace opencoded (uint64_t) -1 with CGROUP_LIMIT_MAX in TasksMax
handling.

v2: Update empty string to indicate the default value as suggested by Zbigniew
    Jędrzejewski-Szmek.

v3: Fixed empty UserTasksMax handling.

Tejun Heo 5da38d0768 core: use the unified hierarchy for the systemd cgroup controller hierarchy
Currently, systemd uses either the legacy hierarchies or the unified hierarchy.
When the legacy hierarchies are used, systemd uses a named legacy hierarchy
mounted on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd without any kernel controllers for process
management. Due to the shortcomings in the legacy hierarchy, this involves a
lot of workarounds and complexities.

Because the unified hierarchy can be mounted and used in parallel to legacy
hierarchies, there's no reason for systemd to use a legacy hierarchy for
management even if the kernel resource controllers need to be mounted on legacy
hierarchies. It can simply mount the unified hierarchy under
/sys/fs/cgroup/systemd and use it without affecting other legacy hierarchies.
This disables a significant amount of fragile workaround logics and would allow
using features which depend on the unified hierarchy membership such bpf cgroup
v2 membership test. In time, this would also allow deleting the said
complexities.

This patch updates systemd so that it prefers the unified hierarchy for the
systemd cgroup controller hierarchy when legacy hierarchies are used for kernel
resource controllers.

* cg_unified(@controller) is introduced which tests whether the specific
  controller in on unified hierarchy and used to choose the unified hierarchy
  code path for process and service management when available. Kernel
  controller specific operations remain gated by cg_all_unified().

* "systemd.legacy_systemd_cgroup_controller" kernel argument can be used to
  force the use of legacy hierarchy for systemd cgroup controller.

* nspawn: By default nspawn uses the same hierarchies as the host. If
  UNIFIED_CGROUP_HIERARCHY is set to 1, unified hierarchy is used for all. If
  0, legacy for all.

* nspawn: arg_unified_cgroup_hierarchy is made an enum and now encodes one of
  three options - legacy, only systemd controller on unified, and unified. The
  value is passed into mount setup functions and controls cgroup configuration.

* nspawn: Interpretation of SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER to the actual mount
  option is moved to mount_legacy_cgroup_hierarchy() so that it can take an
  appropriate action depending on the configuration of the host.

v2: - CGroupUnified enum replaces open coded integer values to indicate the
      cgroup operation mode.
    - Various style updates.

v3: Fixed a bug in detect_unified_cgroup_hierarchy() introduced during v2.

v4: Restored legacy container on unified host support and fixed another bug in
    detect_unified_cgroup_hierarchy().

Tejun Heo ca2f6384aa core: rename cg_unified() to cg_all_unified()
A following patch will update cgroup handling so that the systemd controller
(/sys/fs/cgroup/systemd) can use the unified hierarchy even if the kernel
resource controllers are on the legacy hierarchies. This would require
distinguishing whether all controllers are on cgroup v2 or only the systemd
controller is. In preparation, this patch renames cg_unified() to
cg_all_unified().

This patch doesn't cause any functional changes.

Tejun Heo 66ebf6c0a1 core: add cgroup CPU controller support on the unified hierarchy
Unfortunately, due to the disagreements in the kernel development community,
CPU controller cgroup v2 support has not been merged and enabling it requires
applying two small out-of-tree kernel patches. The situation is explained in
the following documentation.

 https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/tj/cgroup.git/tree/Documentation/cgroup-v2-cpu.txt?h=cgroup-v2-cpu

While it isn't clear what will happen with CPU controller cgroup v2 support,
there are critical features which are possible only on cgroup v2 such as
buffered write control making cgroup v2 essential for a lot of workloads. This
commit implements systemd CPU controller support on the unified hierarchy so
that users who choose to deploy CPU controller cgroup v2 support can easily
take advantage of it.

On the unified hierarchy, "cpu.weight" knob replaces "cpu.shares" and "cpu.max"
replaces "cpu.cfs_period_us" and "cpu.cfs_quota_us".  [Startup]CPUWeight config
options are added with the usual compat translation. CPU quota settings remain
unchanged and apply to both legacy and unified hierarchies.

v2: - Error in man page corrected.
    - CPU config application in cgroup_context_apply() refactored.
    - CPU accounting now works on unified hierarchy.

Tejun Heo e57c9ce169 core: always use "infinity" for no upper limit instead of "max" (#3417)
Recently added cgroup unified hierarchy support uses "max" in configurations
for no upper limit. While consistent with what the kernel uses for no upper
limit, it is inconsistent with what systemd uses for other controllers such as
memory or pids. There's no point in introducing another term. Update cgroup
unified hierarchy support so that "infinity" is the only term that systemd
uses for no upper limit.

Tejun Heo 128fadc927 core: log cgroup legacy and unified hierarchy setting translations
To accommodate changes in kernel interface, cgroup unified hierarchy support
added several configuration items which overlap with the existing resource
control settings and there is simple config translation between the overlapping
settings to ease the transition. As why certain cgroup knobs are being
configured can become confusing, this patch adds a master warning message which
is printed once when such translation is first used and logs each translation
with a debug message.

v2:

- Switched to log_unit*().
2016-06-02 13:02:53 -04:00
Tejun Heo f29ff1159c core: pass Unit into cgroup_context_apply() and use log_unit*()
cgroup_context_apply() and friends take CGroupContext and cgroup path as input
and has no way of getting back to the associated Unit and thus uses raw cgroup
path for logging. This makes the log messages difficult to track down.
There's no reason to avoid passing in Unit into these functions. Pass in Unit
and use log_unit*() instead.

While at it, make cgroup_context_apply(), which has no outside users, static.
Also, drop cgroup path from log messages where the path itself isn't too
interesting and can be easily obtained from the unit.

Tejun Heo da4d897e75 core: add cgroup memory controller support on the unified hierarchy (#3315)
On the unified hierarchy, memory controller implements three control knobs -
low, high and max which enables more useable and versatile control over memory
usage. This patch implements support for the three control knobs.

* MemoryLow, MemoryHigh and MemoryMax are added for memory.low, memory.high and
  memory.max, respectively.

* As all absolute limits on the unified hierarchy use "max" for no limit, make
  memory limit parse functions accept "max" in addition to "infinity" and
  document "max" for the new knobs.

* Implement compatibility translation between MemoryMax and MemoryLimit.

v2:

- Fixed missing else's in config_parse_memory_limit().
- Fixed missing newline when writing out drop-ins.
- Coding style updates to use "val > 0" instead of "val".
- Minor updates to documentation.

Tejun Heo 538b48524c core: translate between IO and BlockIO settings to ease transition
Due to the substantial interface changes in cgroup unified hierarchy, new IO
settings are introduced. Currently, IO settings apply only to unified
hierarchy and BlockIO to legacy. While the transition is necessary, it's
painful for users to have to provide configs for both. This patch implements
translation from one config set to another for configs which make sense.

* The translation takes place during application of the configs. Users won't
  see IO or BlockIO settings appearing without being explicitly created.

* The translation takes place only if there is no config for the matching
  cgroup hierarchy type at all.

While this doesn't provide comprehensive compatibility, it should considerably
ease transition to the new IO settings which are a superset of BlockIO
settings.

v2:

- Update test-cgroup-mask.c so that it accounts for the fact that
  CGROUP_MASK_IO and CGROUP_MASK_BLKIO move together.  Also, test/parent.slice
  now sets IOWeight instead of BlockIOWeight.

Tejun Heo 979d03117f core: update CGroupBlockIODeviceBandwidth to record both rbps and wbps
CGroupBlockIODeviceBandwith is used to keep track of IO bandwidth limits for
legacy cgroup hierarchies. Unlike the unified hierarchy counterpart
CGroupIODeviceLimit, a CGroupBlockIODeviceBandwiddth records either a read or
write limit and has a couple issues.

* There's no way to clear specific config entry.

* When configs are cleared for an IO direction of a unit, the kernel settings
  aren't cleared accordingly creating discrepancies.

This patch updates CGroupBlockIODeviceBandwidth so that it behaves similarly to
CGroupIODeviceLimit - each entry records both rbps and wbps limits and is
cleared if both are at default values after kernel settings are updated.

Tejun Heo 9be572497d core: introduce CGroupIOLimitType enums
Currently, there are two cgroup IO limits, bandwidth max for read and write,
and they are hard-coded in various places. This is fine for two limits but IO
is expected to grow more limits - low, high and max limits for bandwidth and

This patch replaces hard-coded limits with an array indexed by
CGroupIOLimitType and accompanying string and default value tables so that new
limits can be added trivially.

Tejun Heo 13c31542cc core: add io controller support on the unified hierarchy
On the unified hierarchy, blkio controller is renamed to io and the interface
is changed significantly.

* blkio.weight and blkio.weight_device are consolidated into io.weight which
  uses the standardized weight range [1, 10000] with 100 as the default value.

* blkio.throttle.{read|write}_{bps|iops}_device are consolidated into io.max.
  Expansion of throttling features is being worked on to support
  work-conserving absolute limits (io.low and io.high).

* All stats are consolidated into io.stats.

This patchset adds support for the new interface. As the interface has been
revamped and new features are expected to be added, it seems best to treat it
as a separate controller rather than trying to expand the blkio settings
although we might add automatic translation if only blkio settings are
specified.

* io.weight handling is mostly identical to blkio.weight[_device] handling
  except that the weight range is different.

* Both read and write bandwidth settings are consolidated into
  CGroupIODeviceLimit which describes all limits applicable to the device.
  This makes it less painful to add new limits.

* "max" can be used to specify the maximum limit which is equivalent to no
  config for max limits and treated as such. If a given CGroupIODeviceLimit
  doesn't contain any non-default configs, the config struct is discarded once
  the no limit config is applied to cgroup.

* lookup_blkio_device() is renamed to lookup_block_device().

Tejun Heo e57051f542 core: update invoke_sigchld_event() to handle NULL ->sigchld_event()
After receiving SIGCHLD, one of the ways manager_dispatch_sigchld() maps the
now zombie $PID to its unit is through manager_get_unit_by_pid_cgroup() which
reads /proc/$PID/cgroup and looks up the unit associated with the cgroup path.

On non-unified cgroup hierarchies, a process is immediately migrated to the
root cgroup on death and the cgroup lookup would always have returned the unit
associated with it, making it rather pointless but safe. On unified hierarchy,
a zombie remains associated with the cgroup that it was associated with at the
time of death and thus manager_get_unit_by_pid_cgroup() will look up the unit
properly.

However, by the time manager_dispatch_sigchld() is running, the original cgroup
may have become empty and it and its associated unit might already have been
removed. If the cgroup path doesn't yield a match, manager_dispatch_sigchld()
keeps pruning the leaf component. This means that the function may return a
slice unit for a pid and as a slice doesn't have ->sigchld_event() handler,
calling invoke_sigchld_event() on it causes a segfault.

This patch updates invoke_sigchld_event() so that it skips calling if the
handler is not set.
